Game Day Turkey Chili

Chili is typically associated with two things - cold weather and football.  With the big game coming up this Sunday (and yes, I am from New England, so I will be rooting for the Patriots), try out this easy crock pot chili recipe that you can leave simmering all day.  Oh, and the best part? It's a little healthier since it uses turkey meat instead of beef or another red meat that you may use.

No matter who you root for, enjoy the game and eat lots of great food (like this chili)! :)

Ingredients:
-1 medium onion, chopped
-1 green bell pepper, chopped (or two Cubanelle peppers)
-2 teaspoons of minced garlic (roughly 2 cloves)
-2 pounds 93% lean ground turkey meat
-2 19 ounce cans of dark red kidney beans, strained and rinsed
-1 cup beef broth
-1 28 ounce can diced tomatoes
-1 12 ounce bottle Heinz chili sauce
-1 tablespoon cumin
-1 teaspoon chili powder (can add more later for more spice if needed)
-1 tablespoon olive oil
-Salt and pepper to taste
-Sour cream and shredded cheese (optional for topping)

Directions:
In a crock pot, stir the onions, green peppers, garlic, and a little salt and pepper with the olive oil.  Add in the ground turkey, making sure to break it up a bit as you add it, so it is not all in big clumps.  Then add the beans, beef broth, tomatoes, chili sauce, cumin, and chili powder.

Set your crock pot to cook for 8-10 hours.  If you are making this later in the day, you can of course set the timer for 4-6 hours, but it is great if you can get this started in the morning and let it cook all day.  It also makes your house smell delicious!

Once done, scoop the chili into bowls and top with the sour cream and shredded cheese if using.  Happy game day!
