As you all know, we like to travel! We also like to eat! Although I typically post more recipes than restaurant reviews, I decided that today I would bring you all to a great local restaurant that we dine at quite frequently and is a must try the next time you are in town!

The historic seaport of downtown Portsmouth, NH attracts
both locals and tourists alike.
With all of the culture that Portsmouth possesses, there are numerous
restaurants of various cuisines that you can choose from. It can honestly be a bit overwhelming
choosing a place to dine, but that just means that you will have to come back
and visit again! However, if you are in the mood for deliciously homemade
French cuisine, then there is only one place to go – Bridge St. Bistrot and
Wine Bar.
Formerly Café Mirabelle, Bridge Street is famous for its
Parisian and country French cuisine, along with its collection of wine and
rose’s that you can enjoy outside in the summer! The owner, Stephen (a Frenchman
himself), and his wife, Christine, make you feel at home the second you walk
through the restaurants door. In
fact, not only will you feel at home, but you’ll also actually be inside the
owner’s home that they have converted into their restaurant. To add to the comforting atmosphere,
the lights are always dimmed and the inside is small and cozy with Eiffel
towers, Parisian décor, and hanging lights entwined with branches along the
ceiling so that you feel you are being transported to a small French village,
dining in a local café.
With an extensive menu, true to Stephen’s heritage, it is
difficult to choose just one item.
Luckily, they offer a prix fixe menu and special event menus (such as a
Valentine’s day option, hint hint) that typically includes four courses l for a
fixed price. Although everything
at Bridge Street is mouth-wateringly delicious, their best menu items (in my
book at least) include the Crêpe Aux Champignons, a wild mushroom crêpe, for an
appetizer, the, and the crab and lobster stuffed salmon with a creamy champagne
shallot sauce (typically a seasonal menu item), and the Magret of Duck, a
boneless breast of duck served with mushrooms and a balsamic reduction, for
dinner. Then of course, there is
dessert! At Bridge Street, you will find a dessert option for anyone’s
tastes. Are you a chocolate fan?
Then go for their flourless chocolate cake with crème anglaise. Not a chocolate fan? Then try their
white chocolate mousse or calfoutis – a traditional French apple custard
cake. They also offer a classic
favorite – crème brulee. However,
the absolute favorite of Bridge Street regulars is their famous profiterole, or
cream puff. Baked to perfection
with vanilla bean ice cream in the center and topped with Stephen’s special
chocolate sauce, their profiterole is sure to please!
Downstairs Wine Bar
Reservations are recommended for upstairs dining since
seating is limited, but you can always stop in for a drink and bite in their
wine bar downstairs too. You can also rent out Bridge Street for private functions
and events, such as rehearsal dinners and corporate dinners. If you visit their website - http://bridgestreetbistrot.com - the owners sometimes post recipes,
coupons, and they even host cooking classes. Bon Appetit!
